Patient groups treated included those requiring complex multidisciplinary care – those with Head and Neck Cancer, Hypodontia and Facial Trauma. This specialist training provided contemporary training in all monospecialties of Restorative Dentistry (Periodontics, Endodontics and Prosthodontics). Michael attained the prestigious qualifications of Fellowship in Restorative Dentistry with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FDS(RestDent) and Membership in Periodontics (MPerio RCPSG)) in 2021.

Following completion of his comprehensive, contemporary and quality assured specialist training, Michael became a General Dental Council Registered Specialist in both Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry in September 2022.

Academically, Michael was awarded MSc(R) by the University of Glasgow for research into the outcomes of periodontal therapy. He has multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, leading to international presentation of his work.

Michael is well respected within the profession, having been elected by his peers to the Dental Executive Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2018. He has a wealth of experience in the development of both national and international specialist clinical guidelines within the field of Periodontology.

Since 2023, Michael is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons England.

Michael’s interests lie in predictable, evidence-based specialist treatment and particularly enjoys the provision of surgical periodontal therapy, dental implant supported rehabilitation and specialist level Endodontic treatments.

Outside of dentistry, you’ll find Michael on the golf course, keeping fit at the gym or in the kitchen baking.

My Philosophy

I strive to provide modern, comprehensive specialist care in a relaxing and comfortable environment for all my patients. I value ethical, outstanding quality treatment, tailored to your individual needs.

If this interests you, I would be delighted to meet you and support you to take the first step on your journey to dental excellence.

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative Dentistry comprises the subspecialities of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. The role of this fantastic specialty relates to the comprehensive management of the dental and oral tissues. Head and Neck Cancer Oral Rehabilitation, Hypodontia (genetically missing teeth) and complex Trauma are all key roles of the modern specialist in Restorative Dentistry.

I am highly privileged to provide such treatment in my NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry position 4 days per week.

The training I have received in this discipline affords me the capability to provide specialist level treatment in all three of the constituent disciplines. I am particularly passionate about periodontics (gum management), endodontics (root canal treatment) and dental implant rehabilitation (replacing missing or lost teeth).

What is a Specialist?

A Specialist is a dentist who has undergone an extensive period of quality assured, postgraduate training to be eligible for inclusion on the coveted General Dental Council’s Specialist Register. This training is overseen and assessed by other specialists and consultants. Specialist training is the most prestigious, quality assured and well-regarded training pathway available to dentists in the United Kingdom.

As the dental regulator (GDC) states, Specialist lists are designed to:

  • Protect the public against unwarranted claims of specialist skills and experience
  • Help the public, employers and others identify dentists with recognised specialist skills and experience in a district branch of dentistry and to support appropriate patient referral
  • Support development of scientific knowledge and education.

My specialist training journey has taken me across the UK, culminating in my specialist and consultant level training in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region. I underwent rigorous assessment, peer review and Royal College level examinations to finally be awarded the titles of Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Specialist in Periodontics. I thoroughly enjoyed my comprehensive clinical and research training, providing me with the tools to offer the most contemporary and scientifically proven techniques for my patients.

What is a Consultant?

To become a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, a dentist must complete a full, minimum of 5 year full time postgraduate training pathway. Entry onto this pathway is exceptionally competitive and only the highest achieving and clinically capable dentists are permitted. This culminates in the sitting of the pinnacle of UK dental examinations – the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry. This examination is carried out by the combination of Royal Colleges of Edinburgh, Glasgow, England and Ireland.

I am privileged to have achieved completion of this examination in November 2021.

I currently hold a permanent position as Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. I am exceptionally proud to have rebuilt the Restorative Dentistry service in this region, supported by my wonderful team in James Cook.

My daily role involves close working within the hospital multidisciplinary specialty team structures. Clinically, this translates to restoring function and aesthetics through dental implant supported rehabilitation for head and neck cancer patients, management of hypodontia (genetically missing teeth) and caring for patients having suffered major facial trauma. I enjoy training future specialists on a daily basis and providing leadership and management across the region.
